DIN 32676 — common in European dairy and beverage installations.

4. Select the Metallurgy: SS304 or SS316L

Both grades are legitimate choices, and picking the wrong one in either direction costs money. The difference matters most where chlorides, cleaning chemicals, or aggressive product streams are present:

SS304 (1.4301). The economical default for general food and beverage service where chloride exposure is low and cleaning regimes are mild.

SS316L (1.4404). Low carbon for weld integrity, plus molybdenum for substantially better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion from chlorides, brine products and aggressive CIP chemistry.

Consider the whole assembly. A SS316L clamp on a SS304 line gains very little if the wetted surface nearest the joint can corrode. Match the clamp grade to the ferrules, gasket and pipe material so galvanic risk stays low.

5. Specify the Gasket Compound

Ask any maintenance engineer where the joint actually fails and they will point at the elastomer. The stainless steel is rarely the problem; it is the gasket that extrudes, hardens and takes a compression set. Match the compound to temperature, media and cleaning cycle:

EPDM. Strong all-round choice for water, steam and many food products; poor resistance to oils and fats.

FKM (Viton). Higher temperature and chemical resistance including many oils and solvents.

PTFE. Excellent chemical resistance and very high temperature capability, but it deforms plastically, so re-torquing after the first heat cycle is normal.

Platinum-cured silicone. Common in pharmaceutical and biotech service where extractables and leachables must be tightly controlled.

Confirm food-contact compliance such as FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 or USP Class VI documentation when the application requires it, and order the gasket and clamp together so the supplier can confirm groove fill.

6. Define Surface Finish and Cleanability

Finish is usually driven by hygiene requirements rather than pressure. Product contact surfaces are commonly specified at Ra 0.8 µm or better, with Ra 0.5 µm requested for high-purity pharmaceutical and bioprocess lines. Mechanically polished finishes in the 240 to 320 grit range achieve these values economically on stainless steel clamp bodies and fittings. A smoother surface not only cleans faster, it also reduces biofilm harbourage points and lowers the risk of product carry-over between batches.

7. Confirm Certification, Traceability and Supplier Capability

The final checkpoint protects your project long after installation. Verify the high pressure clamp manufacturer can supply:

Certification. Look for 3A sanitary standards and an ISO 9001 certified quality system.

Material traceability. Heat numbers and EN 10204 3.1 certificates should be available for every order, not only for large projects.

Dimensional compatibility. Written confirmation of ASME BPE, ISO 2852 or DIN 32676 dimensions for the sizes you are buying.

Pressure–temperature data. A documented rating curve for the exact combination of size, grade and gasket.

Installation Practices That Protect the Pressure Rating

Even a correctly specified clamp underperforms if it is installed badly. Four habits protect the joint:
